Latrobe hosted Ligonier and Derry for their senior night on Tuesday evening. After celebrating their 11 seniors with the band and speeches the racing started with the girls’ teams. Both LV and Latrobe were able to defeat the small, but talented, Derry squad with Latrobe also topping the Rams 21 to 36. Ligonier’s Rhian Sabo fought to a 2nd place overall but with the Wildcats snagging 3rd and 4th place ahead of Ligonier’s outstanding freshman Mia Herman in 5th, the Latrobe girls secured the win. On the Boys’ side, Latrobe easily dominated, winning 5 of the top 6 spots with only Ligonier’s Tommy Crary spoiling the sweep with a mud-covered 4th place finish after taking a tumble on a muddy slope that had nearly all runners using hands on the ground in 4-wheel drive mode. The Latrobe boys are the most talented in many years, but still have to face elite Norwin and Hempfield teams next week at the Super Sectional meet at St. Vincent College. The Rams were hampered with 3 of their top 8 runners either injured or sick and fell to Derry 26 to 30. The Rams will be looking for revenge next week when the WPIAL Section 1 Championships bring all 9 teams together for a high stakes one-time battle. Ligonier’s MVP was sophomore Brennan Saxfield who tried to fill in the voids as the Ram’s #3 runner and established a new personal record in the process, an outstanding effort on a day when nearly every other runner from all teams was averaging 1 to 1.5 minutes off of their best pace.
